CONFIRMED
Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany collapsed during a training session on Friday 23 October 2026 and was taken to hospital, the club confirmed. Bayern’s official statement says he is undergoing thorough examinations and will stay under medical care, while his coaching staff run all training and match operations for now. Freiburg are next up on Sunday, and for once the result matters less than the man.
What we know
ESPN, citing the club’s statement, reports that Kompany collapsed while watching a session for Bayern’s reserve team. The club confirmed he was taken to hospital.
Bayern’s official statement, reproduced by Bundesliga.com, says Kompany is having thorough examinations and will remain under medical care. His coaching staff will handle all training and match-related operations for the time being.
Sporting director Max Eberl said Kompany’s health is the club’s top priority and that he will get as much time as he needs. Eberl added that the coaching team, in whom Bayern have complete confidence, will take over his duties. Both points come from the club statement as carried by Bundesliga.com and Sky Sports.
The warning signs were there all week. After Saturday’s 6-1 Bundesliga win over RB Leipzig, Kompany was subdued and stayed seated, and ESPN reports he had needed help climbing stairs. Eberl said at the time that his coach was struggling with a virus and a hip injury.
On Tuesday, assistant Aaron Danks took Kompany’s training and media duties ahead of the Arsenal game. ESPN reports Danks said the virus had affected Kompany’s legs at times and caused him pain.
Kompany was still in the dugout on Wednesday for the 2-2 Champions League draw with Arsenal, a result Sky Sports confirmed. Afterwards, according to Complete Sports, Kompany admitted he had not listened to his body.
Manchester City, where Kompany became a club legend as a player, posted a message wishing him a speedy recovery, Sky Sports reports. Reuters, the Guardian and Fox Sports have also carried the news.
What we don’t know yet
The big one: why he collapsed. Bayern’s statement gives no cause, and no diagnosis has been released.
We also don’t know how long he will be out. Eberl’s promise of “as much time as he needs” is open-ended by design.
Finally, Bayern have not named one individual to lead the side from the touchline against Freiburg. The statement refers to his coaching staff as a group. Danks stepped in earlier this week, but the club has not said he will take charge on Sunday.
What is rumored

Sky in Germany reports that Kompany’s condition is stable, relayed by Sky Sports and RTE. Sky Germany is an established broadcaster with reliable Bayern sources, but this is not an official medical update, and the club’s statement does not say it.
Bild, Germany’s largest tabloid, reports that Kompany left the Säbener Strasse training ground by ambulance with an emergency doctor, and that a rescue helicopter landed at the site. Euronews and Livescore relayed the report. Bild is usually quick and well sourced on Bayern but can lean sensational, and the club has not mentioned an ambulance or helicopter.
Some coverage has linked the collapse to the viral infection, and possibly the hip problem Eberl mentioned after Leipzig. Given the week he had, the connection is an understandable guess. It is still a guess. Nobody official has confirmed a cause.
What it means
Start with the person. Kompany’s own words after Arsenal, that he had not listened to his body, read differently now.
On the football side, Bayern have kept things simple. No interim appointment, no shake-up, just the existing staff running the machine they already know. Danks has already handled training and press duties this week, so the transition is not a cold start.
Freiburg on Sunday will be the first test of that setup. Whoever stands in the technical area, the club line is clear and correct: the coach’s recovery comes first, and the table can wait.
Until Bayern publish a medical update, treat everything beyond the club statement as unconfirmed. Get well soon, Vinnie.
