PSG beat Barcelona 4-2 in a 40-shot thriller but lose three players hurt

CONFIRMED

Paris Saint-Germain beat Barcelona 4-2 at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday night, ending the Catalans’ perfect start in a Champions League classic that Sky Sports counted at 40 attempts on goal. The bill was steep: ESPN confirms that Ousmane Dembélé, Marquinhos and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia all went off injured. Luis Enrique called that “the worst part of the game today.”

What we know

Sky Sports’ match report confirms the result. Barcelona lost 4-2 in Paris, their first defeat of the season, in a game with 40 attempts on goal. Forty. That is less a football match than a shooting gallery with a half-time break.

According to match reports including Goal’s, Doué and Lucas Hernández scored for PSG before Xavi Espart (55′) and Lamine Yamal (79′) pulled Barcelona level. Vitinha then struck on 81 minutes to put PSG back in front, a goal Sky Sports confirms in a photo caption, and Fabián Ruiz added the fourth on 86.

A quick correction for anyone who read the Yahoo Sports recap: its wording blurs which team each scorer plays for. Sky Sports and other reports are clear. Espart scored for Barcelona, and Ruiz is a PSG player who scored PSG’s fourth.

Now the damage. Sky Sports reports that Dembélé came off with a suspected hamstring injury inside the opening 20 minutes, and that Kvaratskhelia was helped off in the second half after a knock. ESPN adds that Marquinhos was hurt in the same sequence and went off at the same time as Kvaratskhelia, who was replaced by Maghnes Akliouche.

ESPN quotes Luis Enrique: “The three injuries is the worst part of the game today. We will have to wait for the tests tomorrow.” No official diagnosis or return date had been published when we checked. PSG were already without Nuno Mendes, whose thigh injury the club confirmed on 18 October, per Goal.

What is rumored

L’Équipe, the French sports daily with generally strong PSG sourcing, fears Kvaratskhelia may have suffered an ACL injury, as relayed by Get French Football News via Yahoo Sports. Tests were due Wednesday. This is a medical worry before scans, not a club statement.

On Dembélé, French outlets and aggregators, including RMC, L’Équipe as relayed by Foot Mercato, and the fan site CulturePSG, report a left hamstring lesion of unknown grade. PSG have not confirmed it or given a timescale.

L’Équipe also reports that Marquinhos has a thigh injury and that it worries the medical staff least of the three. Again, nothing official.

Then there is the refereeing row. Archivo VAR, an unofficial X account specialising in refereeing, argues via Goal that Fermín López’s boot to Willian Pacho’s face around the 40th minute should not have been punished, because Pacho’s low head made it dangerous play by the defender. It is not UEFA or IFAB. Per El Comercio and El Telégrafo, Michael Oliver refereed with Marco Di Bello on VAR, Oliver showed López no card, and no VAR intervention led to a sanction.

Law 12 separates serious foul play, a challenge that endangers an opponent’s safety or uses excessive force, from playing in a dangerous manner, which threatens injury while trying to play the ball. Which side of that line this fell on is a judgment call, and no official ruling has been published.

What we don’t know yet

PSG Injury Trio

The test results. No diagnosis, no timescale, no availability list. PSG face Lyon in Ligue 1 on Sunday 25 October, per Goal, and their next Champions League game is on 3 November, per Roundtable.

Barcelona face the first El Clásico of the season at Real Madrid that same Sunday, according to Sky Sports. UEFA and the officials have offered no explanation of the Fermín López incident.

What it means

Are these the two best teams in Europe? Sky Sports calls Barcelona LaLiga leaders, they arrived unbeaten, and PSG beat them in a game that rarely paused for breath. That is a strong case for both, but it is one night, not a league table.

The sharper question is whether PSG can stay at this level with Dembélé, Marquinhos and Kvaratskhelia on the treatment table and Mendes already out. If the ACL fear proves true, that is the one that reshapes their season. Until the scans speak, it remains a fear.
